Baby Downy Woodpecker
This little fella showed up this week at my feeders, flying awkwardly and often missing his mark and landing on the side of the brick wall. At first I thought I had a new kind of woodpecker since his red was on the top of his head instead of the back of his neck but I found out that male baby downys have the red on the top until after their first molt when it moves to the nape of the neck. An adult male downy has been trying to drive him away from the suet but he has been standing his ground and eating as much of it as the other woodpeckers. Good for him.
