Horsefly-like Carpenter Bee

This is a bee subspecies that is only found in Texas. New species for me. I had to send it to the experts to find out what it is. There are not many sightings of it in bugguide and I could not find a lot of information about it. This was the best shot I got of it. It was enjoying some red salvia above the spillway.
