This is one of the Texas native species of milkweed. It was in a blackland prairie preservation field. The ripe seed pods look like antlers. This one has split open and the wind catches the strands of silk and disperses the seeds far and wide. This species has a deep taproot and thrives even in drought. The milky sap of the leaves is poisonous which is why the Monarchs choose it. The caterpillars eat the leaves and in turn are also poisonous to some of their predators, plus it makes them taste foul.
