Right after leaving the death match, I stepped onto the pier and discovered the probable reason behind that fight. There were a couple of fledgling red-winged blackbirds that had just left the nest. This is one of them, partially hidden in the rushes to the side of the pier. The males are known to defend their nests and babies.
