A tiny pine siskin was eating seed on top of the snow. This winter has been the first time I've ever seen this species of finch. Saw them at the lake first. With the very cold weather, they finally found my yard. Now I have flocks of them eating everything in sight. This is an irruption year for them in North Texas. When birds wander outside of their normal winter territory, it is called an irruption. Pine siskins prefer to eat pine cone seeds of spruce trees. Apparently spruces were not producing cones this year so we are graced with a multitude of hungry siskins.
