I didn't realize what I was looking at when I took the photos, just thought it was a funny perching position. The toes seemed to have healed well and the bird was able to fly and move around ok. I have not seen it again. I don't know what would sever several toes on a blue heron. Maybe a big turtle? Or getting fishing line tangled around the toes.
