DFW gets thousands of ring-billed gulls that winter here. We also get smaller flocks of franklin's and bonaparte's as they migrate thru and stop over to feed and rest. Then there are the oddball gulls, not as common. They show up one here and there. This is the fun part for birders to identify what species they are & what stage of life. This time it is a herring gull. Stage of life is first winter since the bill is changing from the all black of juvenile to mixed pink & black bill of first cycle. Herring gulls are much larger than the ring-bills so they tend to stand out in the crowd. With pink legs.
