I was walking along a path in the densely forested old fish hatchery. I turned a corner and came eye to eye with this night heron. It was so close that I could not get the whole bird in the frame. I knew about a nest nearby and this was probably one of the parents, looking for food. There would be lots of crayfish in that pool of water covered in duckweed. The bird just froze, looking at me so I quietly took a couple of shots. I had never been this close to one before.
