White Rock lake gets its name from the white rocks jutting out from banks and the spillway and dam. The geological name for this white rock is Austin chalk. Austin chalk is "an upper Cretaceous geologic formation in the Gulf Coast region of the United States. It is named after type section outcrops near Austin, Texas. The formation is made up of chalk and marl." (Wikipedia) It contains fossils and volcanic ash layers. And turtles, like this Mississippi map turtle, love basking on it.
