I was trying to photograph a carpenter bee and accidently got an unexpected and unwelcome visitor. I did not know mosquitos eat nectar. Researched it and found males eat nector and females also do in the first few days of life. They only drink blood when they are ready to develop eggs. This species turned out to be an asian tiger mosquito, very distinctive with its black body and white stripes on body and legs. Nasty species as they bite at all hours and are known to be carriers of several diseases. I made sure I had no standing water in my yard after seeing this.
